OISRA ALPINE FALL MEETING
OCTOBER 13, 2007

In attendance:  All league reps – Eric Gooderham – Blue Mountain, Rob Smoot – Mt Hood., Dave Smith – Emerald, Todd Williver – Central, Scott Northup – Metro, Chris Hald – Southern, Jack Walker – 3Rivers.  Also in attendance were Chris Kastner – Mt Hood Meadows, Ben McKinley – Commissioner, Richard Sellens – OISRA, Jason Gillies – 3River State chair, Lois Stow – Treasurer/Secretary, and other coaches and parents. Turnout was the largest in years.

Todd Williver called the meeting to order.  Minutes from the spring meeting were approved as written, motion by Rob, 2nd by Ben.

Treasurer’s report followed.  Lois went over the state treasury.  The Alpine treasury increased $2,600 over last year.  Expenses from the prior ski season were discussed.  Lois announced that she is willing to be treasurer for this year but would like OISRA to find a new treasurer, they should be able to do Federal and State taxes for a nonprofit organization.  The idea of finding a CPA firm to do our taxes as a donation was discussed.

Next on agenda was the progress on the Ski Master update for direct input from the timing equipment.  At this time nothing has been done on this program.  Todd recommended that we go through this season and readdress this in spring.

Ben McKinley did an update on our website.  U.S. Outdoor Store has given a $1200 donation to have the banner on the site.  This will cover our alpine expenses for the year.  The idea of a media folder was discussed, this would be a place people could put pictures and movies that league members could use.  Matt Sprick offered to share a release form his firm uses.

Next up was a discussion of State ’08.  Three Rivers league is hosting the event at Mt. Hood Meadows.  Jason Gillies is race chair, Heather Knoop head of registration, and Jack Walker their league president.  Progress is well under way.  GS will be on Thursday for both boys and girls with slalom on Friday.  Work on the logo is in process.  Tentative run locations are GS – blue face/middle fork and slalom on stadium.  The State Race Committee for this year consists of Ben, Rob, Dale Rooklyn, and David Moulton.

Todd brought up the issue of coaches behavior at last year’s state race.  An investigation was made and the investigation determined that coaches’ behavior did not rise to the level of disciplinary action.  Coaches and officials have apologized for their part in the dispute.  At the next state race the position of Assistant Referee will be filled as a non-voting jury position.

The TD training program with Roger Root for OISRA will continue over the next couple years.  Todd is working with Roger on setting up training for OISRA TD’s from within our ranks.

New business:  November 3 officials training course at the MAC Club.  Go to the PNSA website.  There is also a coaches’ symposium November 3 and 4 at Government camp.

Richard brought up the fact that TD’s need to turn in all incident reports to the Board of OISRA.

The 2007-2008 registration process is under way.  CD’s were sent to league reps.  These forms are being coordinated with Richard Sellens.  The website has forms for Coach/ Racer/Volunteer.  All additional forms will be put on the site.

Jack Walker mentioned that he had two new teams that would like to join OISRA.  Catlin Gable has been training with 3Rivers since last year.  The proper procedure for them to become a team is to submit a request to the Alpine Board with their preference on where they race, and the Board will decide which league they race with.

A committee was formed to look into the Sustainability of Skiing.  Scott Northup will chair the committee with numerous other coaches assisting him.  They will look into ways to attract more racers and explore new areas of skiing such as free style.  This will be pursued this season since some free style teams have been forming and we would like to bring them into our organization.

Chris Hald discussed some fundraising ideas he had regarding OISRA taking on obtaining a sponsor such as Pepsi for helping fund state.  State would still be run by the host league with them raising money to put it on, however, OISRA would like to be able to help the host league financially.  Richard also discussed some of the fund raising ideas presented by Henry and the idea of a sportsmanship award that Mt. Hood league is working on this year.

Dave Smith brought up the bussing issues currently being discussed at a state level.  Richard will be in touch with the state school board to find out how this will affect our racers and their transportation to the ski areas.

The omission of the Eligibility clause from our policies was next on the agenda.  Chris made a motion it be reinstated, second by Rob.  It was decided that Rob will figure out the best place to put this and get back to the board.

Elections of Board of Director was counted with 21 of 34 teams voting.  Todd Williver will remain Director of Alpine Division, Rob Smoot, Scott Northup, and Greg Timm will make up the OISRA Board members from our division.

Jack brought up the fact that we should look into having a presence at the Expo Ski show.  This will be looked into by the new committee we formed.

The last discussion of the day included some ways to encompass all snow sports into our organization.  It was suggested we bring to the OISRA Board the idea of becoming OISSA (Oregon Interscholastic Snow Sport Association) and try to bring in snow boarding, and other winter sports.

The meeting was adjourned.
